Karel Koplimets

Karel Koplimets (b. 1986), who studied photography at the Estonian Academy of Arts, is an artist whose works often examine a specific locality or phenomenon. In his “case studies”, where fiction mingles with reality, Koplimets uses found objects, photographs and mock-ups to reconstruct one possible situation with so much thoroughness that the viewer finds it hard to doubt that the information presented is real.

“Case No. 12. District Kalamaja” is an introduction to Koplimets’s upcoming solo exhibition in December 2016 in Hobusepea and Draakoni Galleries in Tallinn. This time, the artist is studying the Kalamaja district of Tallinn, which has made a huge leap forward in the last few years. Besides the disappearances and emergences of buildings and residents, Koplimets has taken note of hints of various odd events and indicated them all on a map with a precise legend.
