Sten Eltermaa

Sten Eltermaa (b. 1986) is an artist with a diverse background. Having studied photography, interdisciplinary arts and philosophy and now about to graduate from the Academy of Arts installation and sculpture department, Eltermaa’s choice of media is just as colourful as his educational career to this point.

In the series “In Limbo” (2016), Eltermaa, whose preoccupations include space, territory, society and power, takes a look at the buildings housing government institutions in The Hague. The photographs are an enticing encapsulation of the artist’s interest in reflections, transparency and glass – but also hint at deeper fears. The cold facades with big windows instil foreboding and curiosity in viewers. The institutions of power behind the mirrors do not reveal their inner world to us but they do offer different perspectives on the city space around the buildings. The buildings reflect something new from every angle, as if they were trying to remain unnoticed among other buildings and make us forget that there is anything at all going on behind the walls.
